From the time we are very young we start learning how to communicate and get our needs met. We learn about people in authority. From our relationships with our parents and other authority figures we learn what we can talk about and what we should avoid talking about at all costs. We get many messages about our individual self-worth and what we have a right to expect from life. As we get older, we get still more lessons from our peers at school. And we all learn very different lessons, depending on the unique circumstances in which each of us grows up.
Some of us learn that if we are loud, aggressive, and insistent, we will get our way most of the time. Others learn that if they pout and act as if their feelings are hurt, other people will feel guilty and give them what they want, etc.
Now, imagine what happens in the workplace. We assemble groups of people with wildly different histories, educational backgrounds, and cultural and life experiences. Then we ask as them to be “good team players” and tell them to work together. Most of these people have good intentions but lack the common framework and the communication skills to make it work. Sooner or later, things begin to break down.
Once you are in a leadership position, you have the authority to affect other people’s lives. They will never see you in quite the same way in which you see yourself.
They will always see you as the boss. If they have a problem with you, they are not likely to talk to you about it. It will seem too dangerous to do so. In fact, the higher up you go in management (and formal authority), the less direct feedback you are going to get, leaving you more prone to distortions in you self-perception and your perception of what’s going on around you.
